The 12th floor Coronary Care Units in a round tower posed a challenge to the new approach in coronary patient care. Staff/patient ratio of one on one required us to turn the typical location of staff functions inside out. Storage/support areas placed at the unit's core allowed a centralized flow of services. Placing staff areas directly outside patient rooms achieved a visual/physical link required by coronary patients. New telemetry systems and lighting added to staff efficiency, improved monitoring and patient comfort.
